Polish jobless rate to fall below 19 pct
Warsaw, Poland, Sep. 21 (UPI) -- Polish Economy Minister Jerzy Hausner said Tuesday the country's unemployment rate should fall to 18.9 percent by the end of September.
July figures put unemployment at 19.3 percent, and August figures out Thursday are expected to put the unemployment rate at 19.1 percent.
After peaking at 20.6 percent in January and February, the Polish jobless rate has fallen every month since.
The government hopes strong economic growth will continue the trend. Growth figures for the second quarter of the year showed gross domestic product growing at a year-on-year rate of 6.1 percent after 6.9 percent year-on-year in the first quarter of the year.
Polish unemployment is the highest among the eight central and eastern European countries of the former communist world which joined the European Union on May 1.
