Poland gears up for early elections
Polish parliament Speaker Wlodzimierz Cimoszewicz said Tuesday he would seek a vote to dissolve parliament May 5 leading to general elections June 19.
Poland has been locked in political turmoil since Leszek Miller was forced to step down as prime minister May 2 -- just one day after Poland joined the European Union.
After a protracted period of uncertainty, Miller was replaced by Marek Belka who put together an unsteady, center-left minority government.
Elections before the middle of 2005 had been widely expected by political analysts who say center-right parties should be able to garner enough votes to form a stable, majority government.
The analysts say Belka is unlikely to try and prevent early elections since such opposition is unlikely to be successful.
