Poland Jobless Rate Dips Below 19 Percent
Poland's jobless rate fell in September for the seventh month in a row, dipping to 18.9 percent from 19.1 percent in August, government data showed Friday.
The number of registered unemployed fell below 3 million for the first time in three years, to 2.98 million, said Halina Dmochowska, deputy head of the Central Statistics Office.
Unemployment in post-communist Poland hit a high of 20.7 percent in February 2003, but has been declining as the economy picks up. Still, joblessness in the country of nearly 39 million remains by far the highest among the group of former communist nations that joined the European Union on May 1.
The government says it expects unemployment to recede further in the months ahead because of economic growth it predicts at more than 5 percent this year and next. (Source: http://www.forbes.com/work/feeds/ap/2004/10/22/ap1604931.html) |
