IMF to help Poland adopt euro
The head of the International Monetary Fund said Tuesday Poland should try to get its income level to be on par with that of other European Union members.
In concluding his visit to Warsaw, IMF Managing Director Rodrigo de Rato said that the country's membership into the EU "marks its successful transition to a market economy," adding that Poland now needs to step up efforts to adopt the euro as its own currency.
The IMF will be opening an office in Warsaw in January 2005 to help Poland meet the demands of joining the euro zone, and Rato said that it was "in Poland's and the euro area's interest to move ahead (with joining the euro zone) as soon as (a) strong structural fiscal position is in place." |
