Ferrer Safin advance in event in Poland

SOPOT, POLAND - David Ferrer of Spain and Klara Koukalova of the Czech Republic, last year's runners-up, enjoyed straight-sets wins in the first round of the Idea Prokom Open on Tuesday.

Third-seeded Ferrer beat Guillermo Garcia-Lopez 6-4, 6-3 and Spanish teenager Rafael Nadal ended a three-match losing streak, defeating Victor Hanescu 6-4, 6-4.

Later in the day, top-seeded Marat Safin of Russia beat Galo Blanco of Spain 7-5, 6-2 and advanced to the second round of the tournament.

In women's play, Koukalova defeated Martina Muller of Germany 7-5, 6-3.

In other news
• Top seed breezes — Top-seed Marion Bartoli of France had little trouble with Italy's Adriana Serra Zanetti, winning 6-0, 6-1 in the first round of the Vancouver Women's Open.
In other matches: No. 3 Alina Jidkova of Argentina beat countrywoman Vanina Garcia Sokol 5-7, 7-5, 6-1; No. 5 Marissa Irvin easily handled fellow American Meilen Tu 6-1, 6-1; and No. 8 Lindsay Lee-Waters of the United States beat Lioudmila Skavronskaia of Russia 6-3, 6-4.

• Coria to miss U.S. Open — World No. 3 Guillermo Coria had arthroscopic surgery on his shoulder in Spain and expects to miss this month's U.S. Open.
