Australia, Poland focus of Paris short film festival

PARIS, Aug 23 (AFP) - Australia and Poland are putting their cinematic talent on display in Paris this week in an international outdoor festival of short films that started Monday.

The two countries have several films in the programme, which also includes vignettes from Britain, Canada, Denmark, New Zealand, Norway, Israel and Sweden.

"The idea is to have a free showing of shorts films that would otherwise be little seen or little known," the director of the festival, Marianne Alla, said.

The Festival Silhouette, as the event is called, is taking place in the Buttes Chaumont park in north-eastern Paris and runs to Sunday.

Alla, who studied film as part of a 10-year stint spent in Australia, said the annual event has ballooned since it started in 2002, when 2,500 people attended.

This year, she said she expected around 14,000 spectators to show up over the course of the evenings.

Among the short films being shown is "Cracker Bag", a 15-minute Australian production that won a major prize at the Cannes film festival last year, and "L'Homme Sans Tete" (The Man Without a Head), an expensively produced piece of French surrealism that has won enthusiastic reviews.
